THE PROJECT
Three shades of Indian sandstone were chosen to clad the first phase of the Biogen Idec pharmaceutical campus in San Diego, CA which sits on a 43-acre hilltop site: Pennine Beige, Pennine Pink, and Terracotta integrating perfectly to compliment the natural colors of the arroyo, or gully, that runs through the center of the campus.
THE FACADE
Designed to create a corporate environment that thrives on innovation, collaboration, and employee development, the project strove to achieve a space that delivered both a comfortable work environment for the dedicated long-hour working employees and also, an aesthetically pleasing campus attractive to potential recruits.
THE BUILDING
80,000 square feet of natural cleft sandstone in various sizes was used to clad the “Italian village look” that architects wanted to recreate with the buildings on campus. Fun Fact: this project is not grouted, the joints are open, giving the exterior an interesting look that the installation team termed “really neat”.
